Zhongshan used to be named Xiangshan, a county established in 1152 and, at the time, geographically included Macao and Zhuhai. The great democratic visionary Dr. Sun Yat-sen (who was also known as Sun Zhongshan) was born here. When he passed away in 1925, Xiangshan was renamed Zhongshan in his honor. It has become the only city in China to be named after a Chinese hero. Zhongshan was upgraded to a prefecture-level municipality in 1988.

中山是孙中山先生的故乡。中山原名香山，1152年设县，当时的香山县包括了今天的澳门和珠海。1925年，孙中山先生逝世，为纪念孙中山先生，香山改名为中山，成为全国唯一以伟人名字命名的城市。1988年，中山撤县设市，升格为地级市。

It now covers an area of about 1,800 km2 with a population of some 4.418 million. There are 23 townships and districts under its administration. Zhongshan is the ancestral hometown of approximately 1 million overseas Chinese living in 90 countries and regions in the world.

中山地域面积约1800平方公里，人口441.8万，由23个镇街组成。中山有旅居世界90个国家和地区的华侨华人100万。

Zhongshan is a great place to visit as well as a great place to live and work. In recent years Zhongshan has been awarded many honors, both within China by the Central Government, the Provincial government of Guangdong and internationally by organizations such as the United Nations(Habitat Scroll of Honor Award). Zhongshan boasts an advantageous geographic location with a convenient transportation network. Within a 90 km radius of Zhongshan, there are five airports and four deep-water ports. The combined capacity of container handling ranks among the top 10 in China and the world’s top 100. Through an extensive network or rail and road links, Zhongshan is accessible to the 6 major cities of the Pearl River Delta within one hour.

中山是一座宜居宜业宜游的城市。历年来，中山市多次荣获国家、省和国际的奖项，如联合国人居奖等。中山交通便利，在90公里半径内，拥有5大机场和4大深水港。中山港集装箱处理量居全国前十，全球百强。一小时内，中山可通达珠三角6大主要城市。

Zhongshan is known as a national historical and cultural center and has nurtured a great number of historical figures other than Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Furthermore, there are 51 intangible heritage listed activities occurring regularly within the city, of which six are recognized nationally: Xianshui Song, Chrysanthemum Show, Drunken Dragon Dancing, Piaose and Shaxi Herbal Tea.

中山名人辈出，历史文化底蕴深厚，有51项非物质文化遗产。其中6项为国家级非遗——咸水歌、菊花会、醉龙舞、云龙舞、飘色、沙溪凉茶。

Zhongshan has established sister-city relationships with Moriguchi of Japan, Honolulu of USA, Burnaby and Markham of Canada, as well as Rull municipality of the Federation States of Micronesia.

中山的国际友好城市有日本守口市、美国檀香山市、加拿大本拿比市和万锦市，以及密克罗尼西亚联邦如尔市。
